On April 10, 2020, the City Of Oakland announced the Oakland Slow Streets initiative to enable safer use of Oakland streets by cyclists and pedestrians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the initiative, selected residential streets will be closed to all non-local, non-emergency motorized vehicle traffic. The initiative’s intent is to make it safer to walk and bicycle throughout the city, with sufficient space for physical distancing. As of May 8 some 20 miles of streets have been given soft closure under the initiative and will stay closed to through traffic until Alameda County lifts shelter-in-place protocols.

WOBO IS ON IT!
WOBO fully supports Oakland Slow Streets and actively participates in helping the City implement and maintain street closures mandated by the initiative. To date WOBO has helped by sending volunteers to post signs promoting the Slow Streets effort, encouraging members to promote community feedback, and publicizing the program via our social media and newsletters. Our efforts will expand as the program develops.
