The new striped bike lane on Grand Ave has created a safe, bicycle-friendly street.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”Our Work”][vc_column_text]In response to a major push from the Grand Ave community, Oakland and Piedmont striped a bike lane in May 2016, from Oakland Ave to Mandana Blvd. The street redesign added bike lanes and has made the street much better for bicycling, but also has calmed traffic and made walking across the street for shoppers much safer.

Today, the Grand Lake neighbors are enjoying a more people-friendly street. Residents who commute by bicycle are liking it too with close to a 20% increase in use, all thanks to the redesign. Traffic is still moving, just at a safer speed (but still under three minutes of travel time from end to end). This shows that the community has made a statement about the type of neighborhood they want to call home and the quality of life they want for their families and the businesses of the district.

WOBO played a big part in making this project happen including outreach in late 2015 and early 2016 at the Grand Lake farmers market, community meetings, and walk audits with councilmember Guillen. • Email Oakland Councilmember Abel Guillen and thank him for his support of making Grand Avenue a better street for walking and bicycling.
  • Continue to patronize businesses on Grand Avenue and let them know you appreciate the improved street and how much easier it is to walk and bike to their business.
  • Join Grand Lake Neighbors and be our eyes and ears on the street of this neighborhood.
  • Sign up here to get email alerts about projects on Grand Avenue, as WOBO would love to see improvements on Grand Avenue all the way past 580 freeway on ramp into downtown.
  • We want your pretty neighborhood photos! Take a flattering picture of your neighborhood’s street and send it to info@wobo.org. We’ll use it to promote positive change.
  • Request a bike rack at your favorite business.
    • Remind business owners that the City of Oakland will install free bike racks on the sidewalk in front of their business. All they have to do is ask.
    • If the business already has a bike rack out front, thank them for that and let them know you appreciate it. Don’t be shy about bringing your bike helmet inside with you as a good prop!
