How Can Grand Avenue be a safe, connected street for all road users?
Update Summer 2026: OakDOT has shared detailed designs (AKA “65% designs” for the Grand Ave Complete Streets Paving Project.
This project:
- spans Grand Ave from Broadway in Uptown to Mandana Blvd in the Grand Lake District
- will slow traffic and make safety improvements along part of the High-Injury Network
- Connect the Uptown, Adams Point, and Grand Lake neighborhoods with low-stress bikeways
- improve bus stops, loading/business access, and add new accessible parking spaces
- repave the roadway
So, what’s next?
- OakDOT will work with parklet owners to update the design of their parklets, so that bikeways will “bend out” around them and eliminate conflicts between parklet users and people biking
- OakDOT will work with stakeholders and partner organizations to make changes to designs, for example, choose loading zone locations and preserve on-street parking
- Construction is anticipated to begin in Summer 2027!

Improvements are coming to
West Grand Ave too!
- OakDOT is in the early design phase to make safety and traffic improvements along West Grand Ave
- these changes will incorporate community feedback on the City’s Bike Plan, the West Oakland Specific Plan, and the Grand Avenue Mobility Plan
- key improvements will include:
- a physical barrier between cars and bikes to keep people on bikes safer
- narrower roadway to encourage drivers to drive slower and make the street calmer
- improved traffic lights, pedestrian lighting, wider curbs, and crosswalks
- new bus shelters and boarding islands
